This isn't a Democracy--
Lately, I hear way too often that “majority rules” because “this is a Democracy.” Well that’s not exactly true.
In a Democracy, yes the majority rules from all across the board. Everyone votes on everything and that’s how issues get passed. There are no representatives.
However, the United States of America is a REPUBLIC. What this means is that we (the people) elect people to carry our voice to the Congress and the Senate for us, and vote the way our district wants them to vote. Sounds pretty simple doesn’t it? And yes, it should be that simple. So what’s wrong with this whole thing?
Enter the 2 major political parties. Both of them are to blame, along with us, yes us, the people. We let them get away with the idea that they need to follow party lines. When representatives follow party lines, they are ignoring us, the people. We aren’t electing a political party, we are electing a representative. They are supposed to take OUR voice to Congress. Too many people are tied up with this Republican, Democrat sitting behind their name, instead of what they are doing. If our representatives would be listening to US the PEOPLE, we would not have “votes along party lines” because the party lines are irrelevant. We would not see the split on health care right now, with most democrats for a public option and republicans against it. Surely the American people are more diverse than that!
The political parties should be irrelevant also. So why do we have them? We ALLOWED this to happen to help identify beliefs that are in common. Some time ago this got perverted to the idea that we could only be one side or the other. So now what happens to the Americans in the middle? Those who just want some common sense solutions? There voice is stifled and what we hear are the extremists speaking for all.
It’s these political parties that have us Americans divided so much. They thrive off us being divided. It’s when people get mad that they contribute to the party… and then the party makes the money, and pushes further.
We (the PEOPLE) need to fix ourselves FIRST before we go blaming the “Democrats”, or the “Republicans”. We need to put people into office in OUR own districts that listen to the voters, that come back to the district wanting input, and that follow what the district wants, and not what the “Party” wants. If we put people into office that listen to us, and that come back and want our input, they would not have to worry about re-election. Because really, the election that matters, is the one from your district, with they listen to the people or they don’t. If they don’t, they get voted out. If they do, who cares what “party” they are with?
**Recently, I went to two town halls meetings, held by Congressman Kingston. The majority of both were against the government option. This was very obvious. Yet, later on, one guy mentions that the majority wins, so we should have the public option. Well, Congressman Kingston is actually doing what “we the people” told him to do in taking the “no” back to DC. Any other answer would not be a fair representation of his constituents. So when someone brings up the “majority”, please ask which majority they refer to. The majority clear across the nation should not affect your representative’s vote.

As Glenn would say, "I'm just saying!" . . .

|2009-10-05 19:38:35 Rick Lauder - Hold your Members of Congress accountable!Again you are right on the money with your analysis! "We the people" need to stand up and tell our members of congress to listen to our wishes or we will remove them from office!!! I have always been a political junkie, but your fresh approach has brought me back from armchair quarterbacking to wanting to be in the battle again! I've decided to wage war in my home state and let everyone who will listen know that I'm not going to let them spend my tax dollars and your without proper checks and balances! "We the people are the Check in this revolution.!"
Stand up and be heard!

|2009-10-05 21:37:04 John4762 - I'm Gumby, **** it!!!You are right on the mark. I changed my party affiliation to Independent for all the reasons you mention. I got tired of being labeled and then having to live with the assumption I supported every single view of my party. I have issues I support on both sides of the of the traditional party lines. While I lean right for sure, I do not vote for or believe something just cause a certain party has (or has not) embraced that issue. I am an individual with my own beliefs and quite capable of forming my own opinion after getting all the information I feel pertinent. That is just how I roll!
I will not have my vote counted on as part of a party affiliation! So, like when Eddie Murphy said, "I'm Gumby, **** it!!!" on SNL (old school) I am saying, "I'm an Independent, **** it!!!
Keep up the good work, Ashliegh!!!

|2009-10-05 23:26:17 Kelly KrouchYou hit the nail on the head. Were you spying on our Constitution meeting last Saturday in PA???? Cause this is exactly what we were talking about: the difference between a Democracy and Republic, Representatives actually listening and taking note of their constituents concerns. I do believe we are to blame for what is going on. I have had blind faith in our politicians, assuming that they have making moral and just decisions in OUR best interests when in reality they have not. Ashleigh, you are wise beyond your years!

The response was just overwhelming and we need to remember why we bought the shirts and keep the issues focused their first. You will get your shirt...Have Patience!!!

|2009-12-28 18:38:52 Christopher Clark - Questions reguarding non ballot initiative statesAshleigh,
I too am from District 1 (Jack Kingston) and have also attended a few of his town hall meetings with huge turnouts. I am a student at VSU and I have a question about our legislative process. GA is not a ballot initiative participating state, so naturally bills have to be introduced by members of Congress from that state to make changes to policies and laws. Our GA lawmakers are notorious for holding us back. Politicians are always behind the curve of the people and it is more pronounced in GA. How can we get anything done ie policies and laws changed without their support? I have written to Jack Kingston on several occaisions and my words fall on deaf ears as with many of the GA Reps and Senators. Another issue I seem to be having is that Jack Kingston is only on the Appropriations Committee, which means he doesn't vote on anything relative to me nor does he even seem to have an opinion lately. How am I supposed to contact other Reps from GA who ARE on say th...

The originators of the US Constitution designed this do***ent to protect us from the very people who want to change it now.
There are some things in our country that are truly broken and in need of repair. The U.S. Constitution is not among the things that are broken and not even on a short list.
In the last election, people said they wanted change. Change comes in two distinct varieties. Positive and Negative. The rosy picture that was painted was for positive changes and a progressive economy. When you strip away the top layer, the changes are excessively negative and the economy is collapsing because our Executive Branch and Legislative Branches of Government have individual political a...
