A Disgrace on behalf of the AP

I finally found time to catch some news this morning, while in the hotel. I was tuning in and out, when I heard the word "soldier." Of course, my full attention was captured then.

I'm sure by now, you all know the story. The AP released a picture of a dying Marine. It's not a nice picture (I looked it up, just to be sure...) In fact, it will bring tears to your eyes if you have any respect, whatsoever, for life--espeically the life of a hero.

While the argument may be that this image shows the true atrocities of war, in no way is consideration given to the fact that this is someone's son, grandson, brother...etc.

How would you feel? Think of your child, your brother...some young man that you know and love, blasted across the internet, with eyes filled with terror as he takes his last breath.

This enrages me.  I certainly don't buy that the AP was trying to do anything other than stir attention for their own glorification. Blast them with letters. It needs to be removed. Again...someone's son.

Now that it has been posted though, maybe some people will realize what the men and women who serve our country go through and how the media has no respect for it.

  • Jake  - that's not necessarily true...
while i personally believe that permission should be asked of family members before such graphics are used, I'd say it does more to do the soldier justice than it does to disrespect him. Much better to show the graphic to keep us in touch with the reality of what our brave men and women are actually doing overseas, than to ignore it and pretend that nothing is happening.
  • Captain Doug Gross, USAF (Ret)  - What part of WRONG and DESPICABLE don't you unders
AP asked the parents. Parents said, emphatically, NO! AP printed it anyway...because printing it furthered their liberal, anti-war agenda. AP should now be referred to as a "state run media!"
  • Scott  - The other agenda...
I suppose that taking a picture of a soldier dying and suppressing it from the public would then be serving the far-right agenda, which has nary an inkling of appreciation for the first amendment, nor freedom of the press. Sometimes reality has a liberal bias. The notion that we should censor war imagery from the public has fascist undertones to it and symbolizes the current lunacy pervading our political debate.

You are entitled to that opinion--but he was a son before a soldier and my heart rests with the family. Maybe that's just me.
  • Randy  - Familys
You have to keep in mind that politicians sons and daughters don't go to war. Soldiers don't start wars, politicians do.
  • Jon
    Ashleigh,
Just found this site...I know, a little late, but...
Anyway, just fyi, he wasn't a soldier. That is reserved for the US Army. He was a Marine. Not that you're wrong, it happens all the time. That's something else that urks me about the media...they never say "Marine", they say soldier. Take it from someone who know's...

    - Your par***s must be so proud of the woman,
and wonderful American you have become. The press should be ashamed but you have to have a
brain to have feelings, War is **** noone deputes that- but Our servicemen deserve the repect of all of us, because that is what guarantes all our freedoms. Makes you sonder if the people who printed this- ever went to war or into the service- probably not.
  • Rulan  - you can't fix stupid
the AP had absolutely no respect for the man who died serving his country. showing a picture of a man dying does absolutely no justice. the only justice that comes with his sacrifice is the uniform he will be buried in and the flag on his casket. and if you disagree your a racist!
  • TheFiredUpPeach  - Sorely mistaken Jake...
    Jake,
I'm a former military wife and you are quite incorrect and misguided in your comment. I can pretty much guarantee you that this Marine that lost his life did not and would not expect or feel as he needed anyone to do him 'justice' as you say by sharing this picture. He was there to do a job and I bet if you walk on to any military base and ask a soldier if anyone needs to dignify their presence or the work they do they will tell you "no". Their oath and their dedication to the cause of America and all suffering, enslaved, and politically stifled humans is justification enough. He did not ask for what happened and he nor his family certainly did not need anyone much less the media to do him
    'justice'. How wrong you are.
  • Julie Pyle(military wife)  - COMPLETE MALARKEY
this reporter evidently has NO family serving over in the midst of the chaos, whose life could be spilling into the ground next to a beheaded corpse.
what in the name of God gives AP the right to air this? who died and appointed AP as God? this is the epitome of the media raping hte American heroes and their families.
non...MUCH MORE than shame on the AP...
as the wife of a retired miltary policeman...as the step-mom of a young man about to go back for his third tour...and as the aunt of another who remains there...
i implore you all to berate and boycott this video as well as any other publcized articles of the AP until a formal apology is made by AP both to the readers and more importantly to the families of those serving there. i for one do not want the last image of my son with his legs blown off to be how i remember him.
  • FrankM  - God Bless us all.....
I have not seen the picture being discussed. I served in the millitary 15 years, most aboard submarines. Regardless of the duties requested, our service men and women deserve our respect and empathy. They are protecting our rights to display these pictures, and the right for us to disrespect them if we wish. These fine soldiers, sailors and Marines took these tasks upon themselves to ensure we keep our rights and to preserve them for generations to come. If you want to disrespect them in any way, that burden rests upon you, not the service member. The actions by the AP were inexcusable and they should hear from all of us about our righteous disgust.

A dying person in the news?

You haven't been reading the news very long, have you?
  • FrankM  - To a simple mind
I have thought about your comment. I served in the military in both the Army and Navy in order to protect the rights we have been given by our Creator. Some of us, like you, take those rights for granted and then squeal loudly when you feel someone has infringed upon them
I described what the serviceman or woman is doing by serving. They are taking upon themselves a duty to protect and preserve those rights through personal sacrifice and displays of courage. They wear their uniform proudly, not for what it makes them to be, but for the pride in them that it represents; the freedom of the greatest land in the world, the United States of America.
And all you have to say is a criticism that I have not seen a particular picture. Then I noticed that you don't have enough courage or pride of self to identify yourself. You are a real peach of a citizen. I don't like what you are, but I gladly defend your right to be just that. Grow up.
  • Rich Dinsmore  - It's all about the First Amendment
As a veteran of the US Army and Vietnam, I have to note that the display of the photo is one of the things the soldier was fighting for. Like the burning of the American flag, publishing the photo is the protestors protected right - just like the flag-burner is protected by the same amendment. All who vowed to protect and defend the US Constitution are honor and duty bound to defend the First Amendment. Bound to defend those who would express said views in ways we find disgusting or worse. This is but one of the many virtues that set America's protectors (soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines)morally and socially above most others. We need to stop re-interpreting the Constitution and get back to defending it...the way it is!
  • FrankM  - Thank you
    Rich,
Thank you for your input, and for your service. I am proud to have walked with you even though we wore different uniforms.
  • Greg Evans, MSgt, USAF-Retired  - Thank you Rich!
Once again, someone that understands that our Constitution is in grave danger of becoming a thing of the past. Our new leader has absolutely no interest in protecting or defending it. He wants to write his own so we can have a One World Society. Listen to his advisers or Czars who ran from war to Canada only to return to have a seat at the table in the White House. We are so close to losing everything we treasure and God Bless Ashleigh for putting this subject in the spotlight! It is time for us as Citizens of The United States, to show Washington D.C. who runs this Country. "WE THE PEOPLE!!!"
  • Rich Dinsmore  - Thanks Frank & Greg
I appreciate the support and kind words. It is my opinion that the Constitution of the United States is what sets us apart from most of the free world and almost all of the non-free world. Until recently, those of us who "wore the cloth" (BDU's. ACU's, etc.) have had no problem with the protections of the honored and revered do***ent, even if it means watching some idiot take down and/or burn the America flag, while constantly reminding oneself that the action is protected under the First Amendment. As far as I'm concerned, to see and/or hear or otherwise witness some act of stupidity with a broad stroke of meanness tossed in for good measure, and to take no action, is true freedom "for all of us..We The People!" For those who defend the US Constitution daily, military or civilian, my everlasting gratitude. It take more guts to stand by and allow free speech even when it's as bad as above, then it does to flick a bic and set fire to the Red, White and Blue.
